Three projects of the Circular EELISA Community
 

 

ITU is one of the six partner universities of EELISA European University. One of the communities built within the EELISA European University, Circular EELISA Community undertakes the execution of three of the 23 projects deemed worthy of funding by the EELISA Joint Community Fund for Inter-Institutional Activities in 2022. One of the projects is “circular@[action]” undertaken by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Zeynep Günay and Dr. Bihter Almaç, the second one is “CIRCULAR IN PLAY”, undertaken by Dr. İmge Akçakaya and Navarro García, J., and the third one is “Be Circular Seminars”, in which Assoc.Prof.Dr. Zeynep Günay, Dr. Bihter Almaç, and Dr. İmge Akçakaya take part. These projects share a common vision of the strategic role that higher education will play in addressing social responsibilities and sustainability challenges.

ITU and THL teamed up at the Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22 Competition
 

 

Following two years of project development, the students and faculty members of ITU and Lübeck University of Applied Sciences (THL) formed a team called “the Deeply High” and represented ITU and Türkiye in the Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22 Competition, held in Wuppertal, Germany, between 20 May and 26 June 2022. Students and faculty members from the Departments of Urban and Regional Planning, Industrial Design, and Landscape Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture took part in the Deeply High team.

 
 
International Accreditation Certificates
 

 

In 2022, the ITU Regional Planning M.Sc. Program has been qualified for the "AESOP Certificate of Quality" as a program accepted among European Planning Schools until 2028.

In 2018, ITU Department of Landscape Architecture was also granted full accreditation by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA).

ITU Department of Architecture, which is the first department in the world to receive international certification from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) outside the USA in 2008, received International Certification for the third time until 2027.

 
 
 
Fatih Municipality Collaboration and Student Projects Exhibition
 

 

A collaboration with the Fatih Municipality was carried out within the scope of undergraduate design studio courses, covering all the departments of the Faculty of Architecture. Student projects were exhibited at Fatih Municipality and ITU Taşkışla Campus after the spring term.

 
 
Horizon Europe - Disaster Resilient Society
 

 

Within the scope of the HORIZON Europe - Disaster Resilient Society 2021 call, the PARATUS Project (Promoting disaster preparedness and resilience by co-developing stakeholder support tools for managing the systemic risk of compounding disasters) was accepted. ITU plays a role as a partner in the project, in which Assoc.Prof.Dr. Seda Kundak (ITU Department of Urban and Regional Planning) is the coordinator, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Kerem Yavuz ARSLANLI (Department of Urban and Regional Planning), Assoc.Prof.Dr. Çağlar GÖKSU (Department of Civil Engineering) and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Ahmet Atıl Asıcı (Department of Management Engineering) are team members. The PARATUS project consortium consists of 20 partners.

TUBITAK 1001 Program Grant for Two Projects
 

 

Research projects by Prof.Dr. Figen Gül and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dilek Yıldız Özkan have been granted support from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TUBITAK), 1001 – Scientific and Technological Research Projects Funding Program. Prof.Dr. Figen Gül’s project is titled “The Effect of Gamification-Enriched Cultural Heritage Interpretation on Spatial Cognition in Kumio Mixed Reality Media”, and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dilek Yıldız Özkan’s project is titled “Evaluation of Spatial Qualities Affecting Feeling Safe on the Streets via Neuroscience and Machine Learning Based Methods through Virtual Spaces”.

The Latest Issue of the A|Z ITU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture
 

 

The latest issue of the A|Z ITU Journal of the Faculty of Architecture titled "Bee" was published. A|Z is an open-access and refereed e-journal that publishes three issues per year in English. A|Z is open to articles and book reviews about design, planning, research, education, technology, history, and art. The editor is Prof.Dr. Aliye Ahu Akgün from the ITU Department of Urban and Regional Planning.

 
 
 
The Latest Issue of the Journal of Computational Design
 

 

The latest issue of the Journal of Computational Design titled “Design Studios and Computation” was published. JoCDe is a refereed journal and publishes two issues per year in English. The editor is Assoc.Prof.Dr. Ethem Gürer from the ITU Department of Interior Architecture.

 
 
"Opening the Landscape"
 

 

The book "Opening the Landscape (Peyzajı Açmak)" was edited by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Meltem Erdem Kaya and published by YEM Publications. 

Opening the Landscape was developed as the collective name of the thought representations that came together to reveal the different areas of interest and different contents that landscape architecture deals with, represents, and speaks about. In the book, the authors Deniz Aslan, A. Burcu Serdar Köknar, Dilek Yürük, Enise Burcu Derinboğaz, Arzu Nuhoğlu, Seda Kurt Şengün, Aslıhan Şenel, Balin Koyunoğlu, Meltem Erdem Kaya, Ömür Sözer Şenol, Zeynep Şahin Ercan, Didem Kara Sarıoğlu, Melih Bozkurt, and Meliz Akyol Alay present the words, colors, politics, representation, publicity, ecology, traces, infrastructure, production, locality and art of landscape to the readers from the perspective of writers with different backgrounds.

 
 
 
Patent: Dynamic Adaptive Façade Module System with Sound Data Interaction
 

 

ITU Architectural Design Computing Graduate Program Alumna Öznur Çakır Aydoğan’s project titled "Dynamic Adaptive Façade Module System with Sound Data Interaction” which was developed within the scope of her M.Sc. thesis and completed under the supervision of her advisor Assoc.Prof.Dr. Meltem Aksoy has been granted a patent issued by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (no: TR 2019 1439 B). The project is a dynamic adaptive façade system that changes shape interactively according to the sound values in real-time and gains sound barrier features by expanding the surface area.

 
 
Twin Transitions: Digital and Circular Transformation of Turkiye's Built Environment
 

 

The two-day seminar, organized in cooperation with ITU Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture - Circularity Research Group in the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology, and the Netherlands Innovation Network Türkiye, was held at the Dutch Consulate in Istanbul on October 20 and at ITU Taşkışla Campus on October 21.

 
 
 
International Master of Interior Architectural Design Program (IMIAD), Summer Workshops and Exhibitions
 

 

ITU Department of Interior Architecture hosted the international IMIAD workshops, held every summer at a different IMIAD partner university (Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart / Germany, Scuola Universitaria Professionale Della Svizzera / Switzerland, The Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology University / India, University of Cincinnati / US, ITU / Türkiye). The project outcomes of the two workshops “See the Water” and “Red Carpet” were exhibited at Taşkışla Campus in July 2022.

 
 
“architalkture” Lecture Series and “arabul” Research Meeting Series
 

 

The “architalkture” Lecture Series and “arabul” Research Meeting Series hosted by ITU Faculty of Architecture continued in 2022. Prof. Alan Penn from University College London and Prof. Karen Lucas from University of Manchester were guest speakers of “architalkture”; and Prof.Dr. Leman Figen Gül was a guest speaker of “arabul”.

“Thursday Seminars” of the Department of Landscape Architecture
 

 

In the 2021-2022 Spring Semester, “Thursday Seminars” of the Department of Landscape Architecture were organized by Assist.Prof.Dr. Ikhwan Kim and Res.Asst. Arzu Güler. The seminar series focused on the subject of the "Virtual Landscape". Besides the meaning of virtual landscapes, the game industry, its position in architectural disciplines, and future possibilities within the discipline of landscape architecture were discussed. Pierrick Haem, Jihun Song, Rachel Lim, and Dr. Güven Çatak contributed by conveying their experience and knowledge as guest speakers.

 
 
108 Awards in 2022!
 

 

ITU Faculty of Architecture members, students, and alumni won 12 international and 67 national awards in 2022 in the fields of architecture, planning, and design.

In 2022, ITU started “the Academic Performance Awards” and 29 faculty members were awarded for their achievements in 2021 and also for the 2016-2020 period.

Dr. Aslı Ulubaş Hamurcu won two awards for her Ph.D. Thesis
 

 

Dr. Aslı Ulubaş Hamurcu from the ITU Department of Urban and Regional Planning won both the ITU Outstanding Ph.D. Award and also YÖK Best Ph.D. Thesis Award in the Fine Arts and Architecture category. The thesis is supervised by Prof. Dr. Fatih Terzi and the title of her Ph.D. is “Modeling socio-spatial change: Impact of socio-technological factors on future urban space configuration”.

TÜBİTAK - Social and Human Sciences Research Support Group Advisory Board
 

 

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Eda Yücesoy (Department of Urban and Regional Planning) has been elected to the Social and Human Sciences Research Support Group Advisory Board affiliated to TÜBİTAK Research Support Programs Presidency.

 
 
ITU Digital Fabrication Lab
 

 

The first project employing the KUKA Robotic Arm titled “Transferring Architectural Construction Knowledge to Parametric Robotic Production Codes” started. The project is carried out by the team consisting of Prof.Dr. Mine Özkar and research assistants Sevgi Altun and Begüm Hamzaoğlu and is financially supported by the ITU Research Projects Coordination Unit, the companies AVENCO Robotics and Automation, Fibrobeton Building Components, and our graduate Dr. Kumsal Asena Şen Bayram (Assistant Professor at Maltepe University).

Additionally, a new KUKA Robotic Arm is employed within the scope of the BIDEB 2232 Project titled “City Development with Design Intelligence” and coordinated by Asst.Prof.Dr. İmdat As from the Department of Architecture.


 
 
 
Taşkışla Spring Fest 22
 

 

Taşkışla Spring Fest was held on 11-13 May at the Taşkışla Campus. The program was designed by the students. The event included workshops, talks, film screenings, dance shows and concerts.
