On Thursday, December 12, 2024, our Rector, Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, along with the university administration, visited our faculty. As part of the visit, a "Evaluation and Future Outlook Meeting" was held in the Orhan Öcal Giray Conference Hall with the participation of our academic and administrative staff.
 
 
 
Accreditation Success of Our Textile Engineering Master's Program
 

 
The Textile Engineering Master's Program has been accredited by the Association for the Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Education Programs (MÜDEK) as the first of its kind in Turkey. As a result, the Textile Engineering Master's Program has become one of only three graduate-level programs in Turkey to receive accreditation.

Our faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Atalay and research assistant Çağatay Gümüş won a bronze medal for their patent titled "Textile-Based Wide Area Pressure Sensing Arrays" at the award ceremony of the 9th International Invention Fair (ISIF'24), organized by TÜRKPATENT and hosted by TEKNOFEST Adana.
 
 
Our Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alper Gürarslan's International LivMat Project
 

 
The international collaborative project titled “Productive Catalytic Living Materials: Combining 3D Biobased Fibrillar Membranes With Synthetic Microbial Consortia To Produce Chemicals,” led by our faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alper Gürarslan, aims to develop durable, energy-efficient, and scalable catalytic living materials using natural and waste resources. The project was launched on July 1, 2024.

The project titled “Development of a Portable Bionanofiber Gun for Direct Application of Drug-Delivery Functional Wound Dressings and Tissue Engineering Optimizations,” aimed at finding solutions for Type 2 diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers, led by our faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Kılıç, has been granted support by TÜSEB.
 
 
Award for Our Faculty Member and Undergraduate Students at TEKNOFEST 2024
 

 
Our faculty member Prof. Dr. Nazan Okur and our undergraduate students Osman Bilal Güzelbakan, Zeynep Esra Güner, and Su Palaz won the second award in the Energy and Environment category at the TEKNOFEST 2024 University Students Research Project Competitions with their project titled “Development of Natural Fiber Reinforced Sandwich Composites for Acoustic Applications Using Additive Manufacturing,” carried out within the scope of the Undergraduate Student Participatory Research Project (LÖKAP).
 
 
 
Awards for Our Faculty Members at the TechXtile Competition
 

 
The project “Underwear Design for Pilots,” developed by our faculty members Prof. Dr. Emel Önder Karaoğlu, Prof. Dr. Cevza Candan, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sena Cimilli Duru, along with Rafet Sayar, was awarded second prize in the "Level-Up" category at the TechXtile Competition. Meanwhile, the third award in the "Level-Up" category went to the “Ecoshieldpro” project, developed by our faculty members Prof. Dr. Fatma Banu Nergis, Prof. Dr. Cevza Candan, our Textile Engineering Master student Bilge Koyuncu, and our Textile Engineering Ph.D. graduate Dr. Lecturer Nebahat Aral.
 
 
Our Faculty Members Contributed to Two Innovative EU-Funded Projects
 

 
Faculty members from our department, Assoc. Prof. Alper Gürarslan and Assoc. Prof. Özgür Atalay, led the RETEX and SmartWaste projects, supported by the European Union’s Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions program. Additionally, faculty members Prof. Dr. Hale Karakaş, Dr. Belgin Görgün, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Aslı Tunçay Atalay participated as Visiting Researchers at Grado Zero Espace in Italy.
 
 
 
Our Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Atalay's TÜBİTAK-IRASME Project Successfully Completed
 

 
Under the coordination of our faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Atalay, TÜBİTAK-IRASME project, titled “Sports acTivitiEs With weARable Technology” (STEWART), has successfully developed a smart t-shirt designed to detect heart rate and body movements, particularly for athletes, using textile-based sensors.
 
 
TÜBİTAK 1001 Project Led by Our Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alper Gürarslan Successfully Completed
 

 
Within the scope of the project, titled “Sustainable Electronics, Protective and Medical Textile Applications of Poplar Fibers”, poplar fibers were successfully transformed into a nonwoven surface form for the first time, leading to the development of innovative textile products suitable for industrial applications. This project has introduced poplar fibers as a sustainable raw material to the textile industry, marking an innovative and eco-friendly step for the sector.
 
 
 
TÜBİTAK Project Led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Atalay Successfully Completed
 

 
Within the project titled "Development of Textile-Based Robotic Structures for Drop Foot Syndrome," led by our faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Atalay, a pressure-sensing socks and textile-based sensor-integrated pneumatic actuators for the treatment of drop foot syndrome have been developed.
 
 
Our Faculty's Research Assistant Handan Palak Successfully Completed Her Research at Cornell University with the TÜBİTAK 2214-A Scholarship
 

 
Our research assistant Handan Palak conducted her doctoral research, supervised by our faculty member Prof. Dr. Burçak Karagüzel Kayaoğlu, with the support of TÜBİTAK for one year in the United States.

Our faculty member, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Atalay and Assist. Prof. Dr. Aslı Tunçay Atalay, are among the inventors of the internationally patented invention titled “Actuators for Soft Robotic Applications". The patent, registered with the number US20240209876A1, was granted by United States Patent and Trademark Office on June 27, 2024.
 
 
ITU Academic Performance Awards
 

 
At the ITU Academic Performance Awards ceremony held on April 25, 2024, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meltem Yanılmaz and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Kılıç were recognized as the individuals demonstrating the highest academic performance in the department, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. İpek Yalçın Eniş and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meltem Yanılmaz received awards as the faculty members with the most publications. Our faculty's research assistants Janset Öztemur and Suzan Özdemir were awarded for having the highest publication-based performance among the research assistants in the department.

Our Textile Engineering Program students have successfully completed their senior design projects. Our students aimed to make significant contributions to the textile industry by focusing on key elements such as sustainability, functionality, aesthetics and user needs.
 
 
R&D Projects in 2024
 

 
This year, 5 more externally funded projects were added to our R&D projects, which are eligible to be supported by national and international funds as well as the industry, while four projects started in previous years were successfully completed in 2024.
 
 
 
Renewal of TÜRKAK Accreditation for Our Laboratory
 

 
ITU Textile and Clothing Quality Control and Research Laboratory, the first and only laboratory accredited by TÜRKAK within our university since May 2015, successfully underwent its accreditation renewal audit on November 1, 2024.
 
 
International Researcher Visit to Our Faculty
 

 
Prof. Dr. Hasabelrasol Abdelbagi Mohamed Ahmed will be a guest researcher at our Faculty for one year with the aim of producing joint projects in the Composite Laboratory together with our Faculty member and Dean Prof. Dr. Nevin Çiğdem Gürsoy.
